That's all Folks!!!!

It
went
by quick
but I learned a lot
about ways to utilize
technology in the classroom.
It is important to incorporate much
of what we have been exposed too. The
key to success is fostering collaborative platforms
and experiences. Thanks Andrew for your knowledge
and
guidance

Headed for the Hills.........

Wow. I have always considered myself a "cityboy", but to teach in a 1:1 school might be the best reason to move to the Sierra's. The presentation I saw today was incredibly inspiring simply because of the amount of options we have when it comes to planning. Jon Corippo was funny,  charismatic, and rousing principal for the Minaret Mustangs in Chiwanakee, California. A 1:1 school is set up so every student has their own laptop. The goal is to promote divergent thinking; students need to learn how to create and think critically rather memorization and regurgitation! I really like that they choose to foster all forms of technology rather than constantly battling with students over foolish rules of discouragement. If students choose to not apply themselves correctly the capabilities of their laptop change and become limited. They're teaching strategies are based on Marzano's techniques. They follow a convenient acronym C.A.S.K. which stands for Comparing, Annotation, Summarizing, and Key notes. I am a huge advocate for incorporating technology, but I am even more of a fan of Annotating. I believe that these skills are crucial for success in college and in LIFE! It also helps instill a sense of honesty when students are listening in class, doing research, working in groups, and learning for the future.

Who made the Kool-Aid?

-->
Tonight we had a delightful presentation by Dr. Mike Vollmert. He is the head of technology integration department for the Rio School District. He presented via teleconferencing through google from his home. I thought it was amazing that the presentations content and educational goals were met with minimal errors in the technology.  I really enjoyed and I agreed with many of his pedagogical analogies and philosophies. I do believe the world we teach in is a jungle and being a teacher is a calling. When I discovered teaching it was the perfect time for me. I instantly fell in love with the job. It is the impossible tasks and administrative decisions that really bother me. Mike called it “ADMINISTRIVIA” and I couldn’t agree more.

As educators we need to determine what is relevant and important enough for our students. We also need to challenge ourselves if we expect our students to accept adversity and change. I also believe that society is changing at such a rapid pace that we must prepare our students for that day. The jobs they may end up with haven’t even been invented yet. Virtual work is increasing as work in the classroom is decreasing. Today textbooks just don’t make sense, the process should be obsolete, but we continue to justify high costs and out of date material. Students need to learn how to become stellar and adaptable learners for the 21st Century. The skills they master now are essential for their success in the future.

Stagnation is futile!

Locate Inspiration

In the past my collaborative efforts have been managed by google docs simply because of its notoriety. Tonight I was introduced to a brainstorming site by the name of mindmeister.com. The site allows students to access their mind maps and thinking sessions from any device, anywhere, anytime. Throughout the teaching credential program I have had many opportunities to work in groups. Coordinating a time and place to meet can become tedious, but using mindmeister allows any group member to work on the project from the comforts of their own environment. I love the group chat function which enables teammates to bounce ideas and finally agree. The site is genius and I believe it will influence the way businesses and people interact going forward.

Another brilliant tool available online is a site called Pinterest. The site immediately grabbed my attention due to immense amount of categories to choose from. The navigation of the site is easy and convenient. I like having the option of adding friends that continue to find other great ideas. But in just a short time of browsing the site you can become overwhelmed with pins you never knew existed. The pinboard is a useful way for users to organize everything they have pinned. When I signed up for the site they installed a very convenient "pin it" button helping me pin anything I see on the internet. Now that I know of this site i also noticed their logo on other sites. They are endorsed by other sites making them more credible and increasing their exposure to users around the globe. The site also has a mobile application that allows users to access it from anywhere there's WiFi. Pinterest is an amazing tool that is growing in popularity. It is also perpetuates the trend of Doing it Yourself (D.I.Y.) which many people have been motivated to start trying. I think we will continue to see the the pinterest model influence Web 2.0 users.
